Amazon Voluntourism Journey

Empowering Amazon Communities
Home » Our Journeys » River Expeditions » Amazon Voluntourism Journey

Have the truly unique and otherworldly experience in our Amazon Voluntourism Journey of living on the Anavilhanas National Park in the Rio Negro, helping efforts to improve quality of life for residents of nearby Amazon communities.

Volunteering in Novo Airão, besides being culturally stimulating, also provides an excellent opportunity to practice speaking Portuguese in real-life situations. In spite of the city’s success in tourism, poverty and classicism continue to thrive in urban and rural areas. Depending on community needs at the time of your arrival, your service may include various development projects or making infrastructure improvements that ease the difficulty of daily life.

Split your time between planting trees to help preserve the Amazon ecosystem, building solar panels for under served families or other systems for more sustainable living. Living among native families in the heart of the rain forest will inspire you to protect the traditional way of life and the region’s precious biodiversity. Interact with the children and families, and experience local’s generosity and charm as they invite you to play soccer!

Journey Experts

Accompanying each journey is a diverse team of experts–from naturalists to regional specialists — who will share their knowledge and insights on the wildlife, landscapes and local culture:

Leonide Principe

tree-climber-leo-principeLeonide Principe has been living in the Amazon as a professional photographer since 1989, and has participated and organized expeditions that have taken him to the four corners of the Amazon. The photographer is also a tree climber facilitator, and takes his art to the highest level of the canopy forest, a world as unexplored and mysterious as the ocean depths.

Marcelo Casoni

amazon voluntourism journey

Marcelo is originally from São Paulo, but has living and working in the Amazon for over ten years, and established the NGO Instituto Amor in partnership with local village communities. Marcelo focuses on giving support in three areas: sanitation, education and youth sports development. One of the foundation’s major projects, building solar panels, has benefited the health of hundreds of local people.

Tropical Tree Climbing is Instituto Amor Partner

Working in alliance with the Instituto Amor, Tropical Tree Climbing also aims to leave behind a positive legacy, from supporting social projects in the Amazon – such as jaguar population monitoring and ecological research – to joining an international effort to safeguard the third largest cat in the world, by exploring, surveying, and establishing jungle protected areas. The Amazon Voluntourism Journey cost includes a direct donation to the project of Instituto Amor, which is used to finance educational projects for local families.

Day1 – Depart from Manaus/Novo Airão/Anavilhanas

Arrival and Accommodation

At 9:00 a.m. starts your Amazon Voluntourism Journey and you will be meet at the hotel in Manaus for an orientation and safety meeting with our expedition leadersand transferred by car to Novo Airão – a small town of 18,000 people located on the River Negro. It’s about a three-hour drive and along the journey. Embark our Joia Rara river boat- which means big rare jewel in Portuguese – and enjoy fine Brazilian cuisine for lunch. Overnight at the home base lodging.

Day2 throught 6 – Manaus/Novo Airão/Anavilhanas

Spend this week exploring the Anavilhanas Arquipelago, navigating through black water ecosystems from Rio Negro. Monkeys, sloths, dolphins, lowland pacas and birds can be observed on jungle nights, or in the river, close to sunset time. Riverside communities with genuine northern Brazilian culture, give the human touch to a region where nature still runs the show. The park’s water system is composed by an infinity of small streams of dark water. These rivers present a high water volume variation during the year. The forests found on the banks of the rivers are called Igapó Forests and are flooded for a period of 6-8 months during the year. The dry forests are known as Highland Forests. This is the typical humid tropical forest, with trees that reach over 35 meters high, like the Samaúma.

Explore this remarkable wilderness on daily excursions by skiff, and—when the water level permits—hikes on dry land. Spot sloths and monkeys, including capuchin and squirrel monkeys, noisy howlers, probable sighting of river dolphins, alligators, piranas, and birds of the region, like Cocoi Heron (Ardea cocoi), Great Egret (Casmerodius albus), BlueYellow Macaw (Ara ararauna), Festive Parrot (Amazona festiva), Rufescent Tiger-herons (Tigrisoma lineatum), Yellow-rumped Caciques (Cacicus cela), Crested Oropendola (Psarocolius decumanus) and Jacamars (Galbulidae), among others.

Listen to a cacophonous symphony of nocturnal animals calling out across the treetops at sunset. Get to know the ribeirinhos who live on the riverbanks, learning about their age-old traditions. Watch them make jewelry and other handicrafts and learn how subsistence farmers cultivate wild plants and trees to earn income. Hear about edible fruits and indigenous plants with medicinal properties hidden in the jungle.

This is a program to develop sensitivity to social issues around the Amazon, and also to develop their own leadership skills such as conflict resolution, cross-cultural communication, public speaking, and critical thinking and analysis. The goal of Tropical Tree Climbing is to provide life-changing experiences that will cultivate a global perspective and open-mindedness in travelers that will ultimately inspire them to become leaders and global thinkers and seek positive change in their own communities and the world.

Travelers will spend about 4 hours a day on service work, participate in different cultural and learning activities in the afternoons, and have some down time for reflection and leadership activities in the evenings.
